Jeff Siegel's analysis

UNION-TRIBUNE

September 3, 2008

FIRST RACECOCO BELLE comes off a game stakes win over the poly track and will try her luck on turf today. She looks like the quickest of the quick and at this abbreviated sprint trip may be hard to overhaul. SYNNIN AND GRINNIN is working on a four race winning streak and gets her toughest test yet today. She's proven on turf and figures to give 'Belle all she can handle. ELETRO NUCLEAR was a high class turf sprinter in her native Brazil and has trained like she's fit and ready for a top effort in her U.S. debut for Lobo. Long shot: Perfectly Natural.

SECOND RACE OUR ROAD SCHOLAR rallied from well back to beat a slightly softer field last month, has trained in steady fashion since, and could produce the last run once again in an open mid-level claiming dash for fillies. SCHILL, a winner of two of her last three, figures right there with a repeat of her last game score. THUNDER AND ICE takes a one level class drop and this Koriner-trained filly has worked sharply of late to indicate she's ready for a top effort. Long shot: Primed And Poised.

THIRD RACE LIPPY RULES drops into a claimer for the first time, switches to Bejarano, and seems to have found a likely spot to earn her diploma. BEENCAUGHTCHEATING has worked like she's got some ability for Miller, and maidens from this barn usually run better than they work. She looks like a live item from the outside post. SPANISH BUNNY, a troubled fourth in her debut, seems sure to improve with experience and is a “must use” in the exotics. Long shot: Mad For Candy.

FOURTH RACE QUEEN OF THECATSLE was visually very impressive beating a softer field over this course last month and a similar effort today should be good enough for a repeat score. Espinoza stays aboard and should have her rolling late. OVERLY TEMPTING tries turf for the first time and the pedigree says she should like it. She's a solid fit on speed figures. WOODLAND CITY didn't show much in her local debut but gets her preferred surface and seems likely to improve with the switch to Gomez. Long shot: Red Diadem.

FIFTH RACE DANCING IN SILKS, a close third in the Real Good Deal Stakes, returns to the first-level allowance ranks today and deserves top billing from his good outside post. Rosario stays aboard for Gaines. VICTORY'S CRY earned a big figure when graduating over this track last month and if he can turn in two alike he'll be a strong threat right back. RECOIL, off the track since last February, has trained like he's fit and ready for Cerin and could be dangerous with a repeat of his fast maiden claiming tally at Santa Anita. Long shot: Pocosin's Game Boy.

SIXTH RACE JUST FOR US has trained well for Becerra and looks cranked up for a top effort first crack out of the box. In an open dash for maiden claimers, let's go with a new face. TAP TAP I WIN drops in for a tag for the first time, removes blinkers, retains Valdivia, and should be forwardly placed from his outside draw. CACH D FISH, first off the claim for Hendricks, adds blinkers and may improve after failing as the favorite in a softer spot last month. Long shot: Quintons Speedy.
SEVENTH RACE JUNGLE PRINCE was an unlucky third in the Bing Crosby Handicap earlier this meeting, has worked in sharp fashion since, and tackles a slightly softer group today while retaining Rosario. With good racing luck he should be along in time. BLACK SEVENTEEN is rounding into his best form and appears to be the best of the speed types. He'll take them as far as he can. COST OF FREEDOM earned a giant speed figure when beating softer in his first start following a Sadler claim. This is a much tougher field but he merits respect. Long shot: Devils Afleet.

EIGHTH RACE TOASTED drops again for Mitchell and isn't what he once was, but the veteran gelding, a recent beaten favorite, may beat this group on past class. WILD BUDDY is another class dropper with a right to run well at this level. Baze should have him within striking range throughout. EXCLAMATION has been away almost a year but has trained well for Mandella and could fire a big shot fresh. Long shot: Pathbreaking.

NINTH RACE CORONET OF A BARON ran well in the Best Pal, missing by less than a length when finishing third, and didn't get an ideal trip, He should move forward considerably off that race and is worth top billing at what should be a fair price. SOUTHERN EXCHANGE won three straight in Canada in visually impressive fashion. It's hard to say who he was beating, but the Florida-bred colt clearly has some quality. KELLY LEAK had his number taken down in the Best Pal but showed he belonged with the best in the west and deserves a big look right back. Long shot: Street Hero.

10TH RACE MADAM STRIKER flashed promise in her only start last year and today returns for Walsh with a series of sharp works that should have her fit and ready for a winning try. Gomez rides her back. SHE'S CHEEKY, in the money in all four career starts, figures in the battle once again and should win one eventually. BURNA DETTE, a solid runner-up in her debut, has a right to improve with experience but was unfortunate to have drawn the rail. Long shot: Cover Girl Elle.

Best bet: Madame Striker (10th).
