Jeff Siegel's analysis

UNION-TRIBUNE

August 30, 2008

FIRST RACE – MATTY'S G FORCE returns to the claiming ranks, has an edge on speed figures and draws a comfortable inside post. If he can duplicate his best main track form on turf, the Mitchell-trained gelding should be along in time. WILD AND READY is another class dropper with a big look at this level. A repeat of his race before last will make him hard to handle. NATE' N ED was sharp in a fast sprint win vs. softer last month and could be dangerous if he can establish the pace without pressure. Long shot: Quarter Moon.
SECOND RACE – SINDYFROMSANTACRUZ is bred to be quick, has trained like a nice prospect for Mitchell and lands Bejarano. Let's hope she leaves cleanly from the rail. SEEKING SIMPLICITY is another with a good series of works and the daughter of Seeking the Gold should be plenty fit for a big try first crack out of the box for Hofmans. VIA VENETVO, from the Baffert barn, is a daughter of Orientate and is another showing speed in morning drills. Long shot: Heatology.

THIRD RACE – ANN'S PLAN takes a two level class drop following a disappointing run earlier this month and the Spawr-trained filly should get back on track in what appears to be a below par field for the level. NICOLE'S IMAGE is another class dropper who'll likely improve in this league. Court stays aboard and should have her on or near the early lead. FOUR FOUR TWO has been chasing much tougher on turf of late and should improve considerably in this softer spot while switching to Bejarano. Long shot: Hard Woman.
FOURTH RACE – KING OF THE CITY tipped his hand when an excellent second in a similar turf sprint earlier this month and a repeat performance lands him in the winner's circle. He seems most effective when allowed to settle early and run on late. CANDY PULL looked good beating a starter's allowance field recently and this late-running sprinter has the pedigree to be equally effective on turf. Blanc should have him running on late. KBELLO figures to be part of the pace and may stick around for a part of the purse. Long shot: Richer Gear.
FIFTH RACE – AUNTGRACE is bred for speed (Lion Heart) and has worked like a good thing for Dollase. In an unclassified field, she seems as good as any. ALPHA KITTEN is a fast working daughter of Tale of the Cat in Sadler's barn and is another who appears fit and ready for a big try at first asking. MOONLIGHT TIZZY, beaten a nose in her debut, has the benefit of a previous race and should be prominent throughout. Long shot: Exotic Design.
SIXTH RACE – SPOILS OF EXCESS, freshened since March, returns in a restricted claimer and the works indicate readiness. A repeat of his Northern California form from last spring should be more than good enough to win. BAD BIG AL has a good recent runner up effort over the track in starter's allowance company and is strictly the one to beat. RHODINE'S KID moves up in class following a sharp try vs. softer and with further improvement might fit at this level. Long shot: Army Officer.
SEVENTH RACE – J P JAMMER has worked well for his debut for Becerra and should be plenty fit for a top effort. In an open event, let's go with a new face. STAR REDEEMER, a strong second in his racing debut against maiden claimers, should benefit considerably from that outing and might be the best of the known element. TUDOR BLUE has improving form, retains Flores, and figures to be running on well late. Long shot: Objectified.
EIGHTH RACE – NORTH RODEO, never off the board in six career starts and a sharp second in the recent Fleet Treat Stakes, returns to the first level allowance ranks today and seems the solid choice. STROPPY didn't get best of the draw but is unbeaten in two starts and has the pedigree to handle the extra distance. A couple of good, solid recent six furlong workouts should have her fit for her first start since May. LIGHTEN UP RULE usually produces a good late run and is worth using in the exotics. Long shot: Mikey Bones.
NINTH RACE – VACARE exits a pair of Grade 1 races in New York and should find this field within her range in her return to California. Nakatani should have her in an ideal stalking position throughout. RANSOM CAPTIVE was overmatched in the Mabee 'Cap earlier this month but should go better in this company. She'll be dangerous with a repeat of her good win two runs back. ZARDANA sprung a 43-1 surprise in the Osunitas and should fire another good shot today from the favorable rail. Long shot: Kris's Sis.
TENTH RACE – PRIVATE POSSE has worked well enough for Mitchell to win at first asking in a soft, bottom rung maiden claimer. ANATOLIAN GOLD has improving numbers and seems the best of those that have raced. ARABIAN CHEETAH puts blinkers on and may move forward after an OK fourth in his recent comeback. Long shot: Runondemand.
Best bet: North Rodeo (8th).
