Jeff Siegel's analysis

UNION-TRIBUNE

August 29, 2008

FIRST RACE – HEY FEATHERS chased much tougher foes in her debut and seems sure to improve a ton with that effort under her belt and a drop into the high priced maiden claiming ranks. Matlow's maidens usually move forward with a race under their belt. MI CHIAMANO MIMI is a first timer in the Mitchell barn with a series of promising works. She should come out firing. TO HOT FOR YOU finished third in a decent debut in a similar affair and has every right to improve while retaining Bejarano and landing the outside post. Long shot: Brewha Baby.
SECOND RACE – PEPPERMINT LOUNGE launches a comeback for Gaines and has worked like she's fit and ready following a pair of promising runs late last year. She looks very live with Bejarano taking the call. ASHTON GIRL, a useful third in her U.S. debut, should benefit from the outing and could be a strong late threat. ROYAL TAAT, an invader from New Zealand in the Sadler barn, gets Gomez and could be dangerous off her decent form down under. Long shot: Billie Bob.
THIRD RACE – CHOCOLATE CANDY has two sprint preps under his belt and seems ready to stretch out and win for a trainer who does very well with sprint to route plays. He's by Candy Ride and as such is bred to move up considerably over a route of ground. ORTHODOX has the same pattern – two sprints and then a stretch out – and lands the rail while adding blinkers. He'll likely take them as far as he can. SEVEN LUCKY J'S, first off the claim for Mullins, is competitive on numbers and may be worth using in the exotics. Long shot: Worth Repeating.

FOURTH RACE – TWIN TURBO has winning connections and not much else but in a wide open modest claiming dash he seems as good as any. MAGIC MIKE takes a significant drop in class and should be competitive in this league based on his nice maiden tally three runs back. FIVE STAR CHARM is another class dropper seeking his proper level and has some back numbers that would put him in the fray. Long shot: Age of Gold.
FIFTH RACE – JACK O' LANTERN has trained like a nice sort for Matlow and in a wide open guessing game seems likely to come out firing at first asking. SCOREWITHCATER is another with a solid work tab to his credit and looks like a live item for Koriner. ESCAPTING THE STORM, from the Hess stable, should be plenty fit following a healthy series of drills and is worth using in the exotics. Long shot: Day With Desi.
SIXTH RACE – EL MARTILLO ran well when beaten a length in a similar affair last month and this Baffert-trained colt with steadily improving speed figures should be primed for his best effort. He seems most effective when held up early and allowed to run late. SWISS SKI beat a state bred field in game style over this course recently and this consistent gelding figures tough right back. CAPTAIN ROY, a sharp Northern California invader, has a look with continued improvement. Long shot: Malibu Canyon.

SEVENTH RACE – LEONIDES is tough at any distance and should be primed for another big effort following a game win in an overnight sprint stakes at Hollywood Park in late June. The post is of some concern but the recent works indicates he's fit and ready. CHEROKEE ARTIST has been facing good ones back east and this lightly-raced colt lands Gomez for his local debut. He should be in the battle throughout. SLEW'S TIZNOW picked a tough spot for his comeback but he's always been very well regarded and he could be dangerous if cranked up for his local debut. Long shot: Waafi.
EIGHTH RACE – SWEET ANITA adds blinkers while dropping to the bottom rung maiden claiming level, shows a :59 1/5 gate work and likely is much better than her debut indicates. In a weak field, she seems well placed to graduate. PROMISE ROSE is another class dropper and has shown enough speed to fit very well with these. She's the one to fear most. HUMIDITY is a 12 race maiden and not one to trust, but she's hit the board in three of her last four starts. Long shot: Vida Storm.

Best bet: Chocolate Candy (3rd).
