Jeff Siegel's analysis

UNION-TRIBUNE

August 28, 2008

FIRST RACE – DIXIELAND CLASSIC drops to her lowest level ever and rates top billing from off the pace. A repeat of her race before last is all she'll need. MORGAN LANE ran well at the level last time out and seems like a logical exacta partner with our top pick. TIZZALATING, first off the claim for Miller, has plenty of room to improve and figures for a share. Long shot: Anointed.
SECOND RACE – RED NECK GAL comes off a nice win vs. slightly stronger foes and goes for the Mullins barn today following a game. She looks like a repeater. PLATA QUEMADA a has a look off her win vs. tougher two races back but a sharp drop in class following her failure as the favorite in her next outing leaves doubt about her current condition. MISS LOLA LA DARE, now in the Chambers barn, rates a big look if she runs back to the quality of her last outing when trained by Sadler. Long shot: Sweet Spot.
THIRD RACE – PARTY PUNCH exits a pair of tough starter's allowance races and drops for the money run while switching to Bejarano. She rates top billing by default. STETTLER, a winner of two of her last three, figures right there with a repeat of her most recent win, a clever score vs. slightly tougher foes. ANGELS' REWARD drops following a disappointing try vs. tougher and fit with these based on her decent score two runs back. Long shot: Absolutely Smitten.

FOURTH RACE – FORM A POSSE missed by a head in a similar high priced maiden claimer earlier this month but if he runs back to that race today he'll earn his diploma. I WANNA GO FAST, fourth with a wide trip in his debut, seems sure to improve with experience and looks tough for a trainer whose second time starters often move forward. KAROLLY adds blinkers, lands the comfortable outside post, drops into a high priced maiden claimer and hails from a hot stable. Today we'll find out if he can run. Long shot: Hotsie.
FIFTH RACE – SPORTIE'S SQUEEZE looked good winning at Pleasanton in July and has worked sharply since for Hollendorfer. She gets Bejarano and should be along in time. MISSOULA, first off the claim for Sadler, fits on numbers, retains Baze, and should be in the battle throughout. CARRIE WITH A C loves to win races, always gives her best, and always must be respected. Long shot: Time Tosay Goodbye.

SIXTH RACE – EXQUISITE tipped her hand when finishing second in her U.S. debut and looks tough to beat today with Gomez riding her back. She exits a hot race and didn't get the best of trips. RESTLESS SOUL, in the money in all three local outings since being imported from England, retains Rosario and won't have to improve much to take it all. MEAN HEAT figures to be closing well and has been first or second in half of her 12 career starts. Long shot: Royal Heraldry.
SEVENTH RACE – MODEL finished a sharp second to undefeated Zenyatta in the Hirsch Handicap here earlier this month and doesn't have that won to worry about today. With patient handling, she should be able to produce the last run. UNSPOKEN WORD fits on numbers, retains Gomez, and should be forwardly placed throughout. PLACID LAKE was in too tough in the Mabee if her comeback but should be fitter and tougher today. Long shot: Lavender Sky.
EIGHTH RACE – KONIZARIS is a first timer with good works in a soft field. The son of Rahy debuts at the bottom so he may have problems but we'll put him on top by default. TEXAS DEVIL has shown he can run some and seems the best of the known element. He switches to Baze and should be forwardly placed throughout. ALPINE NUGGET launches a comeback for Ellis and could be a better type this time around. Long shot: No Thinkin Allowed.
Best bet: Exquisite (7th).
