Spotlight on Del Mar: Looking back at Week 6

UNION-TRIBUNE

August 27, 2008

Highlights: Go Between's victory in the Pacific Classic setting Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott's record at 1-1 for the race after the 1996 loss by Cigar . . . Two $1 million wins on the weekend (Travers, Pacific Classic) and two wins on Pacific Classic Day (Mile, Classic) for jockey Garrett Gomez . . . Two wins in Pacific Classic Day stakes for trainer John Sadler.

Lowlights: The controversy and confrontations following a CHRB raid on Sadler's barn and revelations of alleged not-yet-illegal, not-yet-punishable multiple steroid positives for leading trainer Sadler and distant pursuer Mike Mitchell . . . Eclipse Award sprinter Midnight Lute's disappointing 2008 debut when 10th of 12 after an awkward start and rough run as the 9-10 favorite in the Pat O'Brien Handicap.

LOOKING AHEAD TO WEEK 7

Highlights: Four graded stakes and eight ungraded ones in the seven programs from today through the close of the meeting one week from today . . . Saturday's Grade II Palomar has Solana Beach Handicap winner America's Friend and Del Mar Oaks runner-up Bel Air Sizzle among the nominees. Sunday's Grade II Derby will feature La Jolla winner Sky Cape and Eastern shipper Gio Ponti. Monday's Debutante and the Futurity a week from today will determine the 2-year-old female and male champion runners of the meeting.

Notable: Rafael Bejarano, with 38 wins, enters the final week with an eight-win lead in the rider standings after six wins last week. Joel Rosario (30), Tyler Baze (30) and Gomez (29) are running out of opportunities to catch up . . . Sadler's three-win week extended his total to 27 and the margin to 12 over Mitchell and Jeff Mullins and 13 over Doug O'Neill . . . Nonracing highlight of the week is Saturday's infield microbrew festival and concert by Devo.
