Chargers
Promotion for A.G. Spanos

As part of Dean Spanos' desire to focus on finding a new stadium and as another step toward his eventually stepping aside, the Chargers president has promoted his eldest son to second in command.

A.G. Spanos, 30, has been promoted to executive officer, a position that places him directly under his father in the organization's business operations.

“In the past several years, most every decision I've run by him,” said Dean Spanos, 58. “He's got a good grasp. I've appreciated his input, so I felt it was the right time.”

The move does not affect football operations, as A.G. Spanos is involved only in the team's business side. It also does not change any of the duties of others in the front office.

But CFO Jeanne Bonk, COO Jim Steeg and Chief Marketing Officer Ken Derrett now report to A.G. Spanos.

“I want to spend almost all my time on the stadium effort,” Dean Spanos said last night.

The move was certainly anticipated at some point. It has long been known that A.G. and his brother, John, will assume control of the Chargers when their father steps aside within the next several years.

John Spanos, 28, was recently promoted to director of college scouting. He had previously been assistant director. John Spanos, who also helps in contract negotiations, is being groomed to someday run the team's football operations.

A.G. Spanos, 30, previously held the title of director of marketing programs and business development.
