Key plays: Denver reached the San Diego 18 on its first possession, but on third-and-7, Jay Cutler fumbled when hit by Igor Olshansky and Shawne Merriman recovered. The Chargers drove for a field goal with the help of a 15-yard penalty on John Lynch for throwing LaDainian Tomlinson's helmet. Later, after a 17-yard punt by Denver, a 30-yard pass from Philip Rivers to Chris Chambers on third-and-8 set up a 17-yard TD run by Tomlinson.
Key stats: The Chargers outgained Denver 100-62, with Tomlinson rushing for 48 yards and Rivers passing for 46.
Not in the box score: Nate Kaeding injured his left knee while making the tackle on the opening kickoff. Kaeding attempted kicks the rest of the night but was replaced on kickoffs by punter Mike Scifres.
Key plays: Two third-down conversions from deep in their own territory – an 11-yard run by Tomlinson and an 11-yard pass to Chambers – helped the Chargers avoid losing the field-position battle, although the way their defense was playing, it hardly mattered. Rivers converted two other third downs with passes of 10 yards to Buster Davis and 28 yards to Vincent Jackson as the Chargers drove for two field goals.
Key stats: Denver ran eight plays in the quarter and “gained” a total of minus-7 yards as San Diego posted an opening-half shutout for the first time this season. The Chargers had 26 plays for 110 yards to finish the half with 220 yards to 55 for Denver.
Not in the box score: In their past six home games (all wins), the Chargers have outscored their opponents 144-31 in the first half.
Key plays: For the second straight week, the Chargers took the second-half kickoff and drove for a touchdown. The biggest play on this 84-yard drive was a 24-yard pass from Rivers to Antonio Gates on third-and-10 from the San Diego 39. Gates, who had more drops (one) than catches to that point, made a spectacular one-handed grab while being covered by Dre' Bly. Denver finally scored on a field goal after Billy Volek fumbled a handoff and the Broncos recovered at the Chargers' 7.
Key stats: Through three quarters, Denver had just 143 yards compared with 319 for the Chargers.
Not in the box score: Tomlinson went over 100 yards for the fourth straight game with 10 minutes left. When the Chargers got the ball with 4:20 left in the period, Tomlinson and Rivers were on the sideline. Tomlinson finished with 107 yards, Rivers with 189.
Key plays: Cutler's second 21-yard run in a span of three plays helped Denver move inside the San Diego 10-yard line. But on fourth-and-1 inside the 2, Cecil Sapp was tackled behind the line by Matt Wilhelm. Denver also advanced past midfield near the halfway point of the quarter, but Cutler's fourth-down pass was knocked down by Luis Castillo. And Denver's last chance to score was extinguished on an interception by Quentin Jammer, his first of the season. He's the ninth Chargers defender to record an interception this season.
Key stats: The Chargers had two interceptions and three takeaways, raising their league-leading totals to 29 and 44, respectively.
Not in the box score: The Chargers have won four straight against Denver for the first time since 1967-68, outscoring Denver 147-53 in those games.
