1ST QTR: CHARGERS 3, TITANS 0
Key play: It could have been LaDainian Tomlinson's overthrow of Antonio Gates in the end zone, but we wouldn't want to be negative on a day like this. Instead, we'll go with Philip Rivers' 25-yard pass to a leaping Eric Parker on third-and-9, which moved the Chargers into Tennessee territory and led to a TD that would come in the second quarter.
Key stats: The Chargers had more first downs (7-0), more rushing yards (44-6), more passing yards (98-0), more total yards (142-6) and more time of possession (13:08-1:52).
Not in the box score: Tomlinson wasn't the only Charger to miss a scoring opportunity. On Tennessee's first play from scrimmage, Drayton Florence stepped in front of a Kerry Collins pass and could have scored easily ... except he dropped the ball.
2ND QTR: CHARGERS 20, TITANS 0
Key play: The Chargers had consecutive plays that lost 2 yards each, which should have meant third-and-14 at the Titans' 31. But Chris Hope was penalized 15 yards for a horse-collar tackle on the second play, giving the Chargers a first down at the 16. On second down, Tomlinson ran 8 yards for his second TD and a 17-0 lead.
Key stat: The Chargers continued to dominate, with edges in first downs (16-1), rushing yards (105-15), passing yards (145-0), total yards (250-15) and time of possession (22:59-7:01).
Not in the box score: Tomlinson's two TDs pulled him into a tie with Lance Alworth for the club record with 83. Tomlinson also went over 10,000 yards from scrimmage by gaining 101 yards (60 rushing, 41 receiving).
3RD QTR: CHARGERS 26, TITANS 0
Key play: It was long past the point of anything being critical, but as the Chargers bid for their first-ever consecutive shutouts, they made two interceptions in the quarter. The first was by Shawne Merriman, the second by Quentin Jammer.
Key stat: Last year the Chargers had two interceptions in the same game only three times; Merriman and Jammer gave them two in the same quarter, less than six minutes apart.
Not in the box score: The Titans finally advanced into Chargers territory for the first time in the final 90 seconds of the quarter. The drive ended at the 45 on Jammer's interception.
4TH QTR: CHARGERS 40, TITANS 7
Key play: Nothing in this game could match Terrmel Sledge's ninth-inning single against the Dodgers, which happened while this period was being played.
Key stat: The Chargers fell 3:09 short of posting two shutouts in the same season for the first time since their first season in San Diego, in 1961. But they shouldn't worry too much; there's still another game scheduled against the Raiders.
Not in the box score: The Chargers' P.A. guy embarrassed himself throughout the game by calling Tennessee's LenDale White “LaDale.” How difficult is it to pronounce someone's name correctly, especially one that seems rather simple?
