TIM SULLIVAN: Determining the cause when things go wrong can be complicated, and replacing a coach can be costly. While some fans feel the evidence is conclusive, the man who matters is not about to waver.

Q:
Kevin, What do think of Norv's ability to evaluate and develop players? Much has been made about the Charger's lack of success in the last 2 drafts, but don't we need to consider who's been developing these players? I know Marty is gone...but you have to admit, he was much better at getting these late round draft picks, undrafted FA to perform (Antonio Gates, Kris Dielman Michael Turner, Shawn Phillips, Nick Hardwick, etc.)
- -- Long Vu, San Diego

A:
There are many reason there were so many undrafted players on the Chargers from 2003-06. The Chargers needed players. They didn't think they needed them this year. Marty had nothing to do with player selection after 2004 and every little to do with it then. Norv has a little more input, but that's AJ Smith's department. As for developing them, you give the head coach too much credit and blame. The asisstants (many of them the same assistants as under Marty) are the ones who develop players.

NICK CANEPA: Maybe if the Chargers were goofy, if they threw pies and poked each other in the eye, then maybe the masses could get some kind of slapstick thrill out of them.
