Marlins cool off Dodgers in a big way

ASSOCIATED PRESS

3:15 p.m. August 16, 2006

LOS ANGELES – Miguel Cabrera hit two homers and drove in five runs, Cody Ross hurt his former team with four RBIs before getting injured, and the Florida Marlins beat Los Angeles 15-4 Wednesday to snap the Dodgers' six-game winning streak.

The Dodgers had been on the club's best run in 107 years, winning 17 of their previous 18 games. No team in franchise history had gone 17-1 since the Brooklyn Superbas won 20 of 21 during the 1899 season.

The last NL team to win 17 games in an 18-game stretch was the 1986 New York Mets, who went on to win the World Series. The AL's Minnesota Twins won 19 of 20 earlier this season.

The Dodgers' streak began July 28, after they lost 13 of their first 14 games following the All-Star break.

The 15 runs were the most allowed by the Dodgers in a game this season and matched the total they gave up in their previous seven games. They were outhit 16-7.

The Marlins had lost their past five games to the Dodgers – all during Los Angeles' big streak. They were outscored 31-9 in those games.

Rookie Josh Johnson (11-6) earned the victory, allowing six hits and four runs in six innings. His ERA rose from 2.69 to 2.84 – good for second in the NL behind Arizona's Brandon Webb (2.77).

Cabrera, who has 20 homers and 87 RBIs this season, hit a two-run homer off Aaron Sele in the fourth and a three-run shot off Giovanni Carrara in the sixth. He also singled and scored a run against Mark Hendrickson (1-5) in the third.

Ross put the Marlins ahead for good by hitting a two-out, three-run double against Hendrickson in the first, and added an RBI single to drive in Cabrera in the third. He was helped from the field in the fourth after injuring his right knee in a collision with second baseman Dan Uggla.

The Marlins said X-rays were negative and Ross sustained a bruised right knee. He is day-to-day.

Ross was injured while trying to catch Toby Hall's bloop single with one out and a runner on first. Ross and Uggla collided as the ball dropped between them.

Ross started the season with the Dodgers and played with the Cincinnati Reds before being traded to the Marlins on May 26. He is hitting .241 with eight homers and 31 RBIs.

Los Angeles starters were 12-1 with a 2.55 ERA in the team's previous 18 games, but the Marlins scored four runs against Hendrickson in the first on the double by Ross and an RBI single by Miguel Olivo. Hendrickson hurt himself by issuing three walks before Ross' hit.

Jeff Kent hit a two-out, two-run double in the bottom half.

The Dodgers scored twice in the fourth on a run-scoring double by Kent and an RBI single by Wilson Betemit, making it 7-4.

The Marlins broke the game open by scoring five runs off Carrara in the sixth on Cabrera's second homer and a two-run shot by Wes Helms. Reggie Abercrombie added a two-run double and Hanley Ramirez hit an RBI double off Joe Beimel in the eighth.

Hendrickson allowed five hits and five runs in 2 1-3 innings, his shortest outing of the season. He worked at least five innings in each of his previous 21 starts this year – 13 with Tampa Bay and eight for the Dodgers.

Notes: Julio Lugo, acquired by the Dodgers from Tampa Bay on July 31, started at his natural position of SS, giving Rafael Furcal a rest. Lugo has started at five positions in his last five games – SS, 2B, 3B, LF and RF. ... The Marlins activated C Matt Treanor before the game. Treanor had been sidelined since Aug. 1 with a strained left shoulder. ... The Dodgers outscored the opposition 99-42 while winning 17 of 18. Before that, they were outscored 81-29 while losing 13 of 14. ... The Dodgers dropped to 14-1 with Betemit in the starting lineup. They acquired the 26-year-old switch-hitter from Atlanta on July 28.
