Dodgers 4, Marlins 0

ASSOCIATED PRESS

LOS ANGELES – Chad Billingsley allowed three hits over seven innings, Kenny Lofton hit an RBI double to snap a scoreless tie in the seventh, and the streaking Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Florida Marlins 4-0 Tuesday night for their sixth straight victory and 17th in 18 games.

The Dodgers are on the franchise's best run in 107 years. No team in club history had won 17 of 18 since the Brooklyn Superbas went 20-1 during one stretch in 1899.

The only NL team to win 16 of 17 games other than the Dodgers during the past 10 years was Atlanta, which did so early in the 2000 season.

The Dodgers' streak began July 28, after they lost 13 of their first 14 games following the All-Star break. Their lone loss since they turned it around was on Aug. 9, when they were beaten by Colorado 3-1.

Billingsley (4-3), a 22-year-old rookie making his 12th big league start, struck out a career-best nine and walked one before being lifted for a pinch-hitter. The right-hander threw 106 pitches – 68 for strikes.

Jonathan Broxton and Aaron Sele each worked a hitless inning to complete Los Angeles' seventh shutout this season. The Marlins were blanked for the fifth time.

Florida rookie Anibal Sanchez blanked the Dodgers on three hits over the first six innings, but they broke through against three relievers in the seventh.

Russell Martin greeted Randy Messenger (1-7) with a single, and pinch-hitter Ramon Martinez sacrificed before Rafael Furcal drew a walk.

Lofton sliced a 1-2 pitch down the left-field line to score Martin. After Messenger intentionally walked Nomar Garciaparra to load the bases, J.D. Drew hit into a forceout against Taylor Tankersley to drive in Furcal. Jeff Kent and Andre Ethier followed with RBI singles.

Hanley Ramirez singled to start the game, but was thrown out trying to steal by Martin, just the eighth time Ramirez has been caught in 44 attempts. Billingsley retired his next 14 batters before Miguel Olivo and Alfredo Amezaga singled to start the sixth. Billingsley pitched out of trouble by retiring the next three batters – two on strikeouts.

Sanchez retired 11 of his first 12 batters and held the Dodgers hitless until Drew hit a two-out double in the fourth.

Notes: Marlins rookie 2B Dan Uggla went hitless in four at-bats, ending his 11-game hitting streak. ... Billingsley entered having walked 47 in 61 1-3 innings, including six in his previous outing. He didn't walk a batter until Joe Borchard drew a walk with two outs in the seventh. ... Billingsley's nine strikeouts equaled a season high for the Dodgers. Brett Tomko struck out nine against San Diego on May 4. ... Marlins manager Joe Girardi said C Matt Treanor will probably be activated from the disabled list before Wednesday's game. Treanor has been sidelined since Aug. 1 with a strained left shoulder. ... The Dodgers are 14-0 with Wilson Betemit in the starting lineup. They acquired the 26-year-old switch-hitter from the Braves on July 28 for RHP Danys Baez, INF Willy Aybar and cash.
