SDSU golfers 16th at NCAAs

UNION-TRIBUNE

May 29, 2008

San Diego State shot 22-over-par 310 and was in 16th place yesterday after the opening round of the NCAA Men's Division I Golf Championships at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.

Aaron Goldberg shot 2-over 74 to get into a tie for 10th place and lead the Aztecs.

He was followed by David Palm at 76, while Chad Moscovic recovered from a front-nine 44 to salvage an 80 on the demanding 7,450-yard Purdue Kampen Course.

Johan Carlsson also shot 80 and Matt Hoffenberg carded an 84.

The course was so tough that only three players broke par, led by UCLA's Kevin Chappell with a 69.

UCLA and USC topped the team standings at 9-over, followed by Oklahoma State at 10-over.

Earlier in the day, SDSU's Ryan Donovan was named the Southwest Region's Coach of the Year.

It was a first-time honor for Donovan, the Aztecs' fifth-year coach who is now among nine candidates to be chosen the National Coach of the Year.

SDSU football

San Diego State will give away Marshall Faulk replica jerseys to the first 20,000 fans through the gates when it hosts Cal Poly in its season opener Aug. 30 at Qualcomm Stadium.

Faulk, who twice led the nation in rushing at SDSU, went on to a pro career that included 19,154 yards from scrimmage, the fourth-highest total in NFL history.

Other promotions set for the 2008 season include the annual KGB SkyShow, which will follow the Aztecs' Mountain West Conference home opener against Air Force on Oct. 11.

Season tickets for the six-game home schedule are available through the Aztec Ticket Office at (619) 283-SDSU.

USD football

USD's football team, coming off a 9-2 season and Pioneer Football League title under first-year coach Ron Caragher, will play seven of its 11 games at home this fall.

The season opener is Aug. 29 against Marist at Torero Stadium.

USD starts PFL play Sept. 20 at Campbell University in North Carolina.
