San Diego State quarterback Kevin O'Connell became the fifth quarterback selected in the NFL Draft Sunday when he was taken by the New England Patriots with the 31st pick in the third round.
The 6-foot-6, 225-pound O'Connell, who was the 94th player selected overall, became the first player in SDSU history last season to lead the Aztecs in both rushing and passing. Against Mountain West Conference opponents, he led the league in total offense (284.2 yards per game) and was second in passing yards (239.2).
O'Connell, who was as efficient on the run as he was with his arm, finished his career at SDSU as the school's all-time leader in career rushing yards (1,312) and touchdowns (19) by a quarterback. His 7,689 career passing yards rank third in Aztecs' history.
Meanwhile, New Mexico wide receiver Marcus Smith, a Morse High graduate, was selected by the Baltimore Ravens with the seventh pick of the fourth round. Smith, the 106th pick overall, was the leading receiver in the Mountain West Conference last season, setting a school record with 91 catches for 1,125 yards.
