LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles police have reassigned a detective who told a gang member he had been identified as a killer by a girl who was later murdered by another member of the gang.
Deputy Chief Charlie Beck says Martin Pinner will no longer work homicide cases.
Pinner and a partner told Jose Ledesma that 16-year-old Martha Puebla identified him in a 2002 killing. They created a page of mug shots with Ledesma's picture circled and a note identifying him as the shooter, and faked Puebla's signature.
Puebla had not identified Ledesma and later testified she did not see the shooter.
Ledesma, however, had passed a tip to a fellow Vineland Boyz gang member and Puebla was shot through the face outside her home.
