SAN RAFAEL – North Bay voters will get to decide if they should pay a higher sales tax to pay for a proposed passenger train service for the area.
The Board of Directors of the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit District voted Wednesday to place a measure on the November ballot for a quarter-cent sales tax hike to fund a new rail service between Cloverdale and Larkspur.
The $541 million project would include about 70 miles of track and a parallel bike and pedestrian path.
If approved, the tax increase would begin next year and expire in 2029.
Voters narrowly rejected a similar measure in 2006.
