Texas cops: Man in 2 wrecks over 4 hours

1 dead

LUFKIN, Texas – Police say a motorist caused a fatal rollover after an illegal left turn, then started an eight-car pileup four hours later by rear-ending a stopped car.

Authorities said a grand jury will review the fatal crash and a medical advisory board will review whether Isaac Melvin Milstid, 70, of Houston, should have his driver's license revoked over Wednesday's crashes.

“To be running at a high rate of speed and not see vehicles stopped in front of him, raises questions on Mr. Milstid's ability to drive safely,” Diboll Police Chief Kent Havard said.

A message left at a number listed for Milstid was not immediately returned Friday.

Lufkin police Lt. David Young said Milstid made a left turn from the center lane of a three-lane highway, turning into the side of a Ford Focus that then went into the grassy median and flipped when it skidded sideways back onto the road.

Bertress Allen, 75, of Gladewater, was killed. Four other people in the Focus were taken to hospitals and later released, including a 5-year-old who like Allen had been ejected onto the shoulder of the highway.

Young said Milstid didn't show signs of being intoxicated or having health problems that might have led to a crash.

Four hours later in nearby Diboll, police said Milstid was traveling about 70 mph before he rear-ended a car stopped at a red light. The crash caused a domino effect that led to collisions involving five other cars and a tractor-trailer, authorities said.

Milstid and two others were injured in the second crash, Havard said. Milstid, who was taken to a hospital and later released, was cited for failure to control speed in the second crash.

Young said Milstid's tickets in the first crash have been dismissed and that case will be presented to a grand jury.

Young said Lufkin police called Milstid at his home Thursday to advise a female companion that Milstid shouldn't be driving.

Diboll police took what Havard said was a rare step in asking a medical advisory board to determine whether Milstid should be allowed to continue driving. Lufkin police probably will do the same, Young said.

“We are concerned for not only for the safety of other drivers, but for Mr. Milstid himself,” Havard told The Lufkin Daily News.
