Triathlon becomes celebration of life

Birthday run is annual celebration for Rouse

Mike Rouse plans to park his Lexus near the Mission Bay information center early this morning. In the trunk, a cooler will be packed with sandwiches, chips, cookies, Gatorade and water.

This, though, will be no picnic.



Remembering fallen comrades motivates Marine: Marine Corps Maj. Bill Conner did a double-take when he read the e-mail. “Congratulations, you have won a lottery spot for the Ford Ironman World Championship.” Having entered the lottery nearly every year since 1996, Conner at first thought the e-mail was a hoax, created by one of his Marine buddies.

Workout variety keeps Cardiff exec going strong: As part of an intermittent series, the Union-Tribune will look at the workout routines of people throughout the county. Breaking the ice is John Duke, vice president in charge of print media for the Competitor Group, which includes eight magazines, all focusing on endurance sports.

Fitness Profile: Carson Cooper, multisport : After running cross country and track at Steele Canyon High, plus playing soccer, Cooper, 18, sampled his first multisport event last month, the Imperial Beach Duathlon.

Make like a mule : The move: Combining single leg hip extension with a bent over forward raise. Works on: Gluteal, hamstring, lower back and posterior shoulder strength. Single leg balance.

Marathoner finds running is the best medicine: Marilee Foley experiences this recurring dream. The 43-year-old third-grade teacher is running, running by herself, effortlessly and fast. Sometimes in a race, sometimes training.

Profile: Aderito Beltran, multisport: Raised in Hampton, Va., Beltran, 31, focused on academics through college at Virginia Tech. In May 2002, weighing 270 pounds and living in San Diego, the 6-foot Beltran committed to losing weight.

Fitness Tip : One of the classic scenes in the movie “Caddyshack” is when Chevy Chase's character offers a tip to Danny Noonan, the underdog who's trying to win Birchwood Country Club's annual caddie tournament and accompanying college scholarship.

She swam her way into marathon record book: If friends ask Rendy Lynn Opdycke, “So, what did you do this summer?” they'd better be prepared for a monologue.

Opdycke hits a triple:

Profile: Kevin Chindlund, multisport : Chindlund, 29, ran track and cross country at San Dieguito High, describing himself as a “middle of the pack” runner. He was a semipro racquetball player in his early 20s, juggling distance running and racquetball.

Pump the iron: The move: An Olympic-style lift performed with dumbbells. Works on: Whole body strength, power and coordination

Mournful triathletes reminded of sport's dangers: For the second time in four months, San Diego's triathlon community has been rocked by tragedy. In April, it was Dave Martin, 66, of Solana Beach being killed by a great white shark. This week, it was Barbara Warren, 65, of San Diego, dying after crashing her bike at a Santa Barbara race.

Fitness profile: Courtney Hughes, multisport : Raised in Upstate New York outside Syracuse, Hughes played varsity basketball, tennis and softball in high school. She played varsity tennis at Notre Dame, primarily doubles. Hughes, 31, took to triathlon last fall shortly after moving to San Diego from Seattle.

Fitness tip: Three-time Olympic cyclist John Howard, now one of the sport's most respected coaches, keeps one concept simple when it comes to training.

Need to relax? Stretch: The move: A standing stretch for relaxation. Works on: Stretches the hamstrings, shoulders and chest. Level of difficulty: Beginner

Age-group's best in world has even higher goals: At an age when flying to most of his peers means boarding a plane for vacation, 80-year-old Bud Held has found a different way to soar.

San Diegan takes the fast (kayak) lane to Olympics:San Diego Alive continues its coverage of local Olympians with video of sprint kayaker Carrie Johnson, 24, who began kayaking in San Diego with the Junior Lifeguard Program in 1997, coached by former Olympian Chris Barlow.

Podiatrist puts heart and sole into Olympic volunteer work: This is the third Olympics since Berenter became a volunteer consultant to the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista. He conducts evaluations to help customize footwear and treat injuries with the same techniques that apply to recreational athletes. Some players on the youth softball teams he has coached have been particularly glad to discover that their coach is also a doctor.

Fitness Profile: Scott Laprath, Runner :At Mira Mesa High, LaPrath made a name for himself as a sprinter, running on the Marauders' 4x100 relay team that twice qualified for the state meet.

Fit to be exercised: Working out can now be as easy as playing a video game. Legendary video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto has raised the bar with Nintendo's Wii Fit exercise system for the Wii console, targeted toward getting gamers off the couch and into a workout routine.

One for the glutes : The move: A yoga-inspired stretch for the glutes and hip. Works on: Flexibility of the glutes and piriformis muscle. Relaxation. Level of difficulty: Beginner.

Swimming solo into the record books: Marc Lewis wobbled out of the ocean, staggering sideways before firmly planting himself on sand and into the record books. He took off his swim cap, wiping blotches of tar out of his hair.

Local swimmers also going the distance:Two other local residents will be attempting marathon swimming firsts this summer.

Pain, pleasure to the extreme: In many ways, David Goggins and Akos Konya are polar opposites. At 6 feet 1, 192 pounds, the sculpted Goggins resembles an NFL safety. Konya goes 5-8, 130.

Trainers push gym's athletes to next level:Midway through a workout for three college athletes, their trainer allowed them to break the monotony with a quick race. Kelly Wherry, 20, the only woman in the group, was at a disadvantage against her bigger, faster colleagues.

All but saying the professionals duck each other come spring, the writer asked rhetorically, “Don't today's top pros know that they're not supposed to compete in the same race until October or November?”

Profile: Matt Genovese, triathlete: Genovese grew up in Boulder, Colo., where he was a multisport athlete, earning varsity letters for four years in baseball and golf. It was in golf, though, that he stood out, earning a scholarship to Oregon. Genovese, 30, went on to play for a year and a half on the old Buy.com Tour.

Local program will benefit children in Ethiopia: At one corner of the elementary school playground, Steve Scott and Meb Keflezighi led students on laps around the track. Next to them, three-time marathon Olympic Trials qualifier Josh Cox coordinated kids in a sprint contest.
